Environment Sub-Committee (DESC) is exited with the Forest Land Restoration Project, a project aimed at promoting Forest Land Restoration Activities in schools and Communities around Mpira Dam catchment area.

YONECO in partnership with Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) is set to roll out the project which targets Mpira dam catchment area covering T/A Kwataine and T/A Mpando in the district.

Speaking on behalf of the District Commissioner during District Environment Sub-Committee (DESC) meeting that took place at Water offices in the district on Wednesday 20th November 2024, Principal District Water Officer Mr. Onances Nyirenda said as a district they like a project which mainly targets primary and secondary schools in terms of re-afforestation drive.

“We have been missing these interventions especially in schools and so this is a plus to the district in as far as restoration of degraded areas and environmental management is concerned” he said

During the meeting YONECO was unanimously recommended to proceed and present the project to Ntcheu District Executive Committee on Friday 22 November 2024.

Mpira dam supplies water to Ntcheu, Balaka and Liwonde towns. However, deforestation has been a challenge to its capacity.
